Abstract

1441455 Coating by sputtering COULTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS Inc 5 June 1973 [8 June 1972 12 Jan 1973] 26887/73 Heading C7F [Also in Division G2] A flexible transparent film preferably less than one micron thick is made by successive sputtering of Ti on to a polyethylene terephthalate sheet, then one or more layers of In 2 O 3 and a layer of copper-doped CdS or ZnIn 2 S 4 . The coating of CdS may be formed by reactive or non-reactive sputtering in an R.F. field. For reactive sputtering an atmosphere of H 2 S and CuCl 2 is used. The cadmium sulphide layer may be replaced by Si 3 N 4 , ZnS, Sb 2 S 3 , As 2 S 3 , GaAs, CdSe or ZnSe. The sheet of polyethylene terephthalate is prepared for receiving a sputtered layer by heating to 100‹C to remove internal stress, outgassing to remove occluded gas and brushing to remove static charge.
