Abstract

1283113 Phenol-formaldehyde resins FIBREGLASS Ltd P BODEN P J CROOK M E HALL and S P RILEY 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 12311/70 Headings C3C and C3R A phenol -HCHO resin comprises the product of reaction of 1 part wt. of a composition produced by reacting a phenol with concentrated H 2 SO 4 in a ratio of 0À8 to 1À5 moles H 2 SO 4 per mole phenol, and then adding per mole of phenol a quantity of HCHO in the range having a lower limit of 0À3 moles and an upper limit of 0À8 moles when using 0À8 moles H 2 SO 4 and decreasing to 0À5 moles when using 1À5 moles H 2 SO 4 ; with from 0À1-8 parts wt. of a phenol-HCHO resole produced by reacting a phenol and HCHO in the ratio of at least 0À9 moles HCHO per mole phenol in the presence of a basic catalyst. The phenol may be a cresol, 3,5-xylenol or hydroquinone or phenol itself. A solid foam may be produced by reacting the composition with the resole in the presence of a surfactant and a foaming agent. Preferred foaming agents are selected from low boiling point aliphatic hydrocarbons and halogenated derivatives thereof such as CCl 4 , CCl 3 F, CCl 2 F 2 , CF 2 ClCFCl 2 , C 2 Cl 2 F 4 , CHCl 2 F, CH 2 Cl 2 , CH 3 Cl, C 5 H 12 , C 6 H 14 , C 7 H 16 , and C 6 H 5 SO 2 -NHNH 2 . The surfactant is preferably a silicone oil, but may be polyoxyethylene sorbitan monopalmitate or monolaurate. Inorganic fillers such as diatomaceous earth and strengthening materials such as glass beads, glass fibres or glass flake may be incorporated in the foam. Uses.-Fire-retardant insulating material.
