Abstract

Cellulose material based on alkaline catalysed phenol/formaldehyde resol precondensates are produced by reaction with acid catalyst (toluene sulphonic acid isomers as 60-100% pref. 60-70% aq. soln) plus at least one surface active agent (EO deriv of castor oil) a blowing agent consisting of an org. liq. of low b.pt (pentane or trichlorotrifluoroethane) a mineral salt releasing gas with the acid, a mineral filler and a plasticiser. Formaldehyde/phenol ratio is 1.1-1.9 and resol water content is 1-20%. Mineral filler is kaolin silica, talc or asbestos in amt 5-50%. Plasticiser is a bitumen emulsion "Flintkote" (RTM). The foam has better compressive strength, fire resistance, is less friable and moisture sensitive and has more uniform cell distribution.
