Abstract

1335973 Foamed phenol-formaldehyde resins; polymers of pyran and furan derivatives CIBAGEIGY (UK) Ltd 12 Jan 1971 [6 Feb 1970 10 Sept 1970] 5946/70 and 43399/70 Headings C3C and C3P Synthetic resin foams containing phenolformaldehyde resins are made by adding between 0À5 and 15 parts of a liquid which is polymerizable exothermally on addition of strong acid (having a pka# 2À2) to 100 parts by weight of a phenol-formaldehyde resin. Between 5 and 30 parts by weight of a physical blowing agent are added and the mixture is treated with one or more strong acids which cure the resin and polymerize the liquid, thus liberating heat and so causing the blowing agent to vaporize and foam the mixture. The preferred liquids are oxygen-containing heterocycles, in particular pyran and furan derivatives, furfuryl alcohol and (2,3-dihydro- 4H-pyran-2-yl)methyl, 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran- 2-carboxylate being mentioned. The preferred blowing agents are organic liquids having boiling points between 30 and 100‹ C. and are water-immiscible. The preferred acids have a strength such that pka is 2À2 or less and are used to an extent of 10 to 40% of the weight of the resin. 0-5 to 5% by weight of resorcinol, based on the weight of the resin, may be added, and so may 0À1 to 5% of an emulsifying agent.
