Abstract
1,150,576. Phenolic resin and foams thereof. R. D. MAITROT. 12 July, 1966, No. 31188/66. Headings C3C and C3R. A phenolic resin is prepared by mixing partly molten, partly solid, phenol with chips of sodium hydroxide, adding progressively thereto formal, heating and settling the mixture, neutralizing it, e.g. with HCl or H 3 PO 4 , settling it and removing the resin layer, and partially dehydrating the resin. The product may be hardened by heating or addition of e.g. H 2 SO 4 or benzene sulphonic acid; before this glycerinized maleic anhydride or dibutyl phthalate may be added. A foam may be prepared by adding to the resin a foaming agent, e.g. dinitroso - pentamethylene - tetramine, distributed in kieselguhr, diatomaceous silica, kaolin, or talc powder, together with NaHCO 3 and dibutyl phthalate, before adding the hardener.
