Abstract

A foamable phenol-formaldehyde composition comprises a stable dispersion in a phenolformaldehyde resin of a solid capable of generating gas by reaction with an acidic substance, a thixotropic agent sufficient to hold the solid in suspension normally but permitting the composition to be poured after agitation. Preferably the resin is formed from 1 mol of phenol and 1.05-1.2 mols. formaldehyde. It may be modified by addition of a thermoplastic polymer, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl butyral (see Specification 625,576). The preferred gas generator is sodium bicarbonate, and the preferred acid, an aromatic sulphonic acid. Suitable thixotropic agents are bentonite or finely divided silica, e.g. "Aerosil" (Registered Trade Mark). The maximum degree of thixotropy is preferably produced by special mixing methods, e.g. use of a cone mill. In the example, an alkaline catalysed phenolic resin was placed in a tank with a propellor stirrer. Polyvinyl butyral was added and dispersed, and then "Aerosil", and sodium bicarbonate. The whole mixture was then passed through a cone mill. The product mixed with aqueous p-toluene sulphonic acid gave a foam which was cured in a mould.
