Abstract

1,243,689. Impregnating corrugated card board. BOISE CASCADE CORP. 27 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 46011/68. Heading D1L. An impregnating material, e.g. a resin, silicate solution, glue or paraffin wax, is supplied at one fluted edge of a travelling corrugated cardboard sheet, together with a carrier gas or vapour and the material is drawn through the flutes of the sheet dispersed in the carrier, using suction applied at the opposite edge. Liquid impregnants may travel through in the form of small columns of liquid, passage being assisted by compressed air. The arrangement may be such that impregnation takes place from opposite edges of the sheet successively, each step giving impregnation across only half the width of the sheet. Spray impregnants may be applied from both sides simultaneously, the flutes having been evacuated previously. Solid impregnants should be fusible and the sheet and/or carrier are heated to this end. The impregnant may also be a vapour. To assist maintaining vacuum in the flutes the board liners may be sprayed with liquid, e.g. water or a solution of the impregnant, and the edges may be sealed as they pass through the impregnating station. Several apparatuses are described, all similar to that of Fig. 2, in which impregnating liquid supplied at 9 is drawn under vacuum in small columns 9' through the flutes of sheet 2. Hot compressed air from 10 assists the flow and prevents excess impregnation due to premature hardening. The impregnant is hardened by cold compressed air from 11. In Fig. 12 an edge sealing device accepts the sheet between lips 7 (Fig. 2) of guides 50. The projecting liners 2" of the sheet are bent up by the curve of walls 44' (Fig. 10, not shown) and seal against these walls, a vacuum being drawn via chamber 47. Adjustable sealers 54 are also provided. An impregnant may be sprayed from nozzles 53 of this device. [GB1243689A]
