1,185,319. Making cartons. INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. 20 Nov., 1967 [7 Dec., 1966], No. 52582/67. Heading B5D. A mandrel and pressure pad apparatus for sealing together the bottom closure elements of a paper-board container comprises a mandrel 12 the exterior surface of which is provided with areas which are relieved to various depths to correspond to the configuration of the various thicknesses of the bottom closure elements 100 in their folded position and a pressure pad which is provided with a totally flat surface and a plurality of adjustable projecting pressure stakes 42 located at selected points in the surface for applying increased pressure to corresponding points in the bottom closure elements to compress the paper-board layers and thereby block potential leak paths through the bottom closure in elements.
