Abstract

1343493 Corrugated container-board ALTON BOX BOARD CO 10 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 13950/71 Heading B5N Rigid-when-wet corrugated container-board is prepared from a preformed web of medium and at least one preformed web of liner by printing upon the reverse face of the or each liner web discretely metered increments of a curable thermosetting resin, especially a phenol-formaldehyde resin, entrained in a vaporizable liquid vehicle (usually water) and immediately vaporizing the vehicle from the web by heating at a temperature and for a time less than that required to cure the resin. The container-board may comprise three plies 5, 6 and 7 to which the resin solution or emulsion is applied by applicators 1, 2 and 3, and 4, respectively, comprising gravure rollers of the "quad", "pyramid" or, especially, the "tri-helicoid" type. The partially impregnated webs are then passed around heated rollers 8, 9 and 10 to remove the water vehicle and as much other paper-entrained water as is desirable without curing the resin. The medium web is passed to a corrugator 11, adhesive is applied to the crowns of the corrugations by means of applicator 12 and the corrugated web laminated to liner 5 by means of a back-up roller 13. The adhesive may be cornstarch or a cornstarch-resorcinol mixture and may molecularly bond with the phenolic impregnant of the webs under curing conditions. The second liner 7 is then laminated to the medium liner composite by means of adhesive applied at 14 to the exposed crowns of the corrugations and the laminate subsequently cut-off, scored and/or slit to provide container blanks such as the one shown in Fig. 2. The blank may be converted into a "flat folded" or "knocked-down" container as in Fig. 3 by completing the "manufacturer's joint" which involves adhering or stitching of the flap 25 to the remote edge of end panel 21. Either the blank or the knocked-down container may be subjected to heat to complete the cure of the resin impregnant, usually by passage on an endless conveyer through a tunnel oven (Fig. 5, not shown).
