Abstract

1464936 Edge sealing of plastics laminates in packaging ZIRISTOR AB 28 Nov 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 51580/74 Heading B8C A tube is formed, in the course of packaging operations, by the overlap sealing of opposite edge zones of a web of laminate packaging material 8, 9, 10 incorporating coating layers 9, 10 of heat-sealable plastics material, oversealing the edges of the web exposed internally of the tube, and applying heat to the interior of the tube in the course of sterilization, the said inner edge of the web being over-sealed by a strip of material 11 which is heat-sealable to the coating layer 9 of the web inside the tube and which is substantially inextensible, or extensible only to a small degree, at the temperature applied by heat in the said course of sterilization. The laminate packaging material consists of a base 8 of paper, or cardbaord, which is coated with a polyethylene material 9, 10, the sealing strip 11 comprising a base layer made of a material 12, e.g. polyamide, or aluminium foil, which has a higher softening temperature than that of the polyethylene material 9, 10 and which is coated, on both sides, with a material, e.g. polyethylene, which can be sealed to the web coating 9. After a tube has been formed it is brought into contact with a sterilization liquid, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, and the latter is evaporated by introducing air, at a very high temperature, into the tube. Despite cooling of the tube from the exterior, overheating at the thickened joint is not prevented and evaporation of the 6% moisture content in the paper layer 8 at the joint, particularly at the web edge, forms a vapour pressure beneath the covering strip 11. During this process the laminated strip 11, with the particular base layer 12, e.g. of polyamide, or aluminium foil, does not deform under the action of the heat and vapour pressure so that the cut, inner edge of the laminated web material always remains completely covered. One side of the strip 11 may be affixed to the coating 9 to project from one edge of the web before the tube is formed. A package, Fig. 1, is formed from a tube and has folded-down, and sealed, lugs 6, 7.
