Abstract

1,175,408. Germicidal soap bar. UNILEVER Ltd. 25 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No; 19548/67. Heading C5D; An anti-bacterial soap bar contains an antibacterial compound of the general formula where, independently, X 1 and X 3 are halogen, X and X 2 are hydrogen or halogen and p is a whole number from 1 to 5; and between and 15% of free C 8-22 fatty acid. Preferably, the halogen in the compound is chlorine and desirably X 2 , if halogen, should be ortho to the ether group, i.e. p = 2, to give prepferred anti-bacterial agents 4,2<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - trichloro - 2- hydroxy diphenyl ether and 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dichloro - 2 - hydroxy diphenyl ether. Substantially straight chain fatty acids are most suitable, such as stearic acid,. myristic acid, or mixtures of acids derived from coconut oil, tallow fat, or palm kernel oil. Advantageously, the weight ratio of free fatty acid to the anti-bacterial compound should be at least 4:1 and the preferred weight ranges are 0.1 to 5%, especially 0À1 to 2%, of the antibacterial compound and 2 to 10% of the acid. The soap used in the experiments was prepared from an 80/15/5 tallow/coconut/sperm oil distillate. Other anti-bacterial agents may also be present with that of the invention. [GB1175408A]
