Abstract

A treatment of effluents and sludges contaminated by organic pollutants results in easily sepd. harmless solid and liquid phases. Contaminants comprise mineral oils and their derivs. (as spent oil, emulsions, lubricating oils and greases, gas and fuel oils, or sand and soil contaminated by them), or animal/vegetable fat prodn. and tannings byproducts. During treatment, effluents and sludges contg. differing contaminants are mixed to contain max of 10 wt.% solids and 30 wt.% of organic matter. pH is set to 7.5-9; solids may be adjusted by sand or oily sludge and following cpds. are added: to the mix under intermediate agitation (all pts.wt.): 1-10 building cement, 1-10 aluminium-sulphate, 0.1-1.0 iron-chloride-sulphate, 0.1-1.0 sodium-acrylate, 0.001-0.01 anionic polymer and finally 0.001-0.01 yeast. Agitation is continued for approx. 10 mins. depending on the temp. of the mixt. and pH is set to 6.8-6.9. - The phases are sepd. and water obtd. during solid phase dewatering can be reused for dilution of consecutive batches.
