In a boiler of the type comprising a horizontal shell 10 constituting a water or water and steam chamber, a tubular furnace chamber and a furnace flue extending longitudinally through the water chamber from the front end thereof and opening at its rear end into a combustion chamber 13, the front wall of which includes a tube plate having in it a series of tubes 14, 15 extending forwardly from the combustion chamber through the water chamber, apparatus for cleaning the tube plate and adjacent ends of the tubes includes at least one pipe which lies in the combustion chamber between the tube plate and rear wall of the chamber and connected to a source of cleaning fluid under pressure, the tube having a slot in the wall thereof through which the fluid can be discharged on to the tube ends and plate, and means for moving the pipe within the combustion chamber so as to bring the slot opposite the various areas of the tube plate to be cleaned. As shown, pipes 24, 25 are mounted on a framework 26 and coupled to cables 45, 46 connected to winding drums 41 rotated to move the pipes into and out of ports 21, 22 in the boiler wall, the framework being hinged and movable to lie alongside the wall of the boiler when not in use.
