Abstract
996,494. Cathode - ray tube mounting. KOLSTER-BRANDES Ltd. April 5, 1963 [April 9, 1962], No. 13571/62. Heading H4T. [Also in Division H1] To reduce the likelihood of a cathode-ray tube implosion, the glass envelope is stressed by applying forces by means of pressure pads at the corners of the rectangular faceplate in directions towards the tube axis. As shown, the tube is surrounded by a steel stress band 2, Fig. 1, formed in two parts drawn tightly together by adjusters A. The stress band is seated on a plastics or rubber band 6 formed with a mounting flange 6a. Alternatively, steel band 2 may be coated with plastics to prevent damage to the glass envelope. At the corners of the tube, pressure pads are provided between bands 2, 6 and angle brackets B are riveted to stress band 2. Brackets B are bolted to a tube cabinet for mounting purposes, and also by tightening the bolts, each bracket tends to pivot about its bend, and so cause additional pressure on the tube corners. This method of stressing the tube envelope may be used with a band 2 not under tension. In an alternative arrangement, pressure pads 20, Fig. 4, at the corners of tube 25 are urged inwards by tightening bolts 21 relative to frame 22. A torque of 37 inch-lbs. on bolts 21, or the bolts used in adjustors A and/or brackets B is said to prevent implosion.
