Abstract
996,012. Phase separator. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 23, 1962 [Nov. 23, 1961], No. 42011/61. Heading B1D. A phase separator comprises a chamber 4 having an inflow conduit 14 connected thereto, first and secopd outflow conduits 8 and 16 connected respectively to the lower and upper parts of the said chamber and a delivery conduit 18 for substantially uncontaminated phase flow and leading from the central portion of the chamber. The first outflow conduit 8. and the delivery conduit 18 may be provided with valve means controlling the flow therethrough. As shown, the volume of the chamber is such that the flow rate therethrough is considerably. lower than that through the conduits so that phase separation takes place more readily in the chamber. Baffle means 17 are located in the chamber to assist the phase separation, and gas bleed vent means 15 are provided. In operation, the contaminated liquid phase (either mainly aqueous or mainly organic) enters through inflow conduit 14 to the baffle 17 in chamber 4 where the contaminating phase separates, any entrained gas passing out of the gas tube 15. The heavier phase, including any solid matter, flows away through conduit 8 while the lighter phase flows away through conduit 16. The decontaminated liquid phase leaves the chamber via outlet 25 and the annular space between rod 20 and tube 13 and flows out of the delivery conduit 18. Manipulation of rod 20 to control the effective area of orifice 17 ensures that the heavier phase is present at the level 18 if so desired. Solid contaminant collecting in the base of chamber 4 is flushed away by raising the knob 20 from time to time to pull the tip 24 through the orifice 7.
