Abstract

1307362 Combined settling-filter apparatus ALEXANDER ESPLEN & CO Ltd and J C GABRIEL 18 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 25060/69 Heading BID In operating a combined unitary settling tank-filter device used to remove an impurity heavier or lighter than the main medium, e.g. an oil-water system, the contaminated liquid is fed via line 13 to a spiral baffle plate 12 which cause the oil to separate and float to the top 14 of the tank where its presence (or absence) is detected by probes 30a, b, c. The probes activate diaphragm controlled outlet valve 16 by means of control panel 29 and solenoid 28, 30c being a warning and safety control probe. The partially purified water is channelled around the bottom of casing 11 and over weir 11a and into outlet pipe 22 having a spring biassed valve 23 operated either by pressure within the tank or by further probes (not shown). Valve 16 is closed if valve 23 is open and vice versa. The water then passes via duct 22a to filters 36, e.g. of terry towelling wrapped around perforated metal screens, or of a layer of powder material formed on a carrier. From the filters 36 the water passes to storage tank 35 which may have a cooler 38. The valves 16, 23 open alternately and in order to keep a steady flow of water through the filters 36 the storage tank may be divided, one part containing the filters as before whilst another, also connected to the filter chamber, feeds in a steady flow of uncontaminated feed liquid. Pipe 35a allows direct feed of uncontaminated feed to the storage tank. The filters may be accommodated in several valved ducts for selective maintenance or replacement.
