A railway wagon having small wheels and a low floor may be coupled to a wagon having larger wheels and a higher floor, Fig. 1, by providing vertically adjustable side buffers and draw gear on the first wagon. When both wagons have small wheels and low floors, Fig. 2, then their floors may be converted into a continuous surface for loading by providing hinged metal flaps 19 which bridge the gap between wagons. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8, the head stock 7 with the buffers and draw hook 5 may be released from brackets 22 by withdrawing pins 21 and pivoted down about hinge points 20 to provide an extension of the floor 4. A draw bar 23 is provided. In Fig. 1 the buffers and hook may be lowered by withdrawing locking pins from the holes 9 and brackets 8 and reinserting them in holes 10 when the headstock 7 has been pivoted down on links 12, 13. A weight compensating spring 11 is provided. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the locking pins are replaced by pin or shafts slidable in guide slots in the brackets 1a. In a further modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the headstock 7 may be raised or lowered by a pivoted screw threaded shaft or shafts which may be rotated in a spindle nut pivotably connected to the bracket 8. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 9 and 10, the head stock is divided into two parts 7a, 7b which carry the hook 5 and the double-ended buffers 6a respectively. The part 7b is pivotable about hinge points 20, but the part 7a moves up and down in a motion guided by the co-operation of shafts 17a with slots 16a.
