Abstract
711,289. Double-deck vehicles for carrying vehicles. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. Aug. 5, 1952 [Aug. 2, 1951]; No. 18292/51. Class 78 (4) The elevating upper platform. 11 of the vehicle illustrated is raised and lowered by means which permit it to tilt about a transverse axis 32 and to move bodily forward about an axis 36 to bring rollers 28 into engagement with guides 21, 22 supported from the chassis. The guides 21, 22 are inclined and thus take a substantial proportion of the load of the upper platform 11, and the inclinations of the guides differ, as shown, so that the platform 11 is inclined in its lowered position (shown in broken lines) and extenas rearwardly of the lower platform 10 to facilitate loading. Each guide 21 or 22 comprises outwardly facing channel irons 25 on the inner flanges 27 of which runs the roller 28, which is held captive by its flanges 29 and by stops 37, 38. The guides are supported by struts 18, 19, 20, 23. The platform 11 is raised and lowered by a pair of hydraulic rams 34 pivoted at 36 on opposite sides of the chassis and at 32 to the platform 11. To lock the platform 11 in its upper position, screws 40 on the guides have tapered inner ends adapted to engage in correspondingly shaped sockets on the platform. Each of the platforms 10, 11 is formed with-lateral flanges and the upper platform 11 partially nests in the lower platform 10 when lowered. The guides 21, 22 illustrated may be replaced by single inwardly facing channels within which work rollers similar to the rollers 28. While the invention is principally concerned with vehicles for carrying motor cars as illustrated, it may also be applied to similar vehicles for carrying merchandise. According to the Provisional Specification the upper platform may be held against swaying by the means described in Specification 711,290: this subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification.
