Abstract

994,884. Safety device for trigger mechanisms. SECRETARY OF STATE, WAR DEPARTMENT. Oct. 12, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 37151/61. Heading F3C. Relates to a trigger mechanism for use on a large calibre recoilless gun intended for operation by two men, the mechanism being of the type having a spring-urged firing member, a sear 7 engaging a bent 25 on the firing member, and a trigger 6 for releasing the sear. The firing mechanism is provided with a safety shield moving into and remaining in position when the breech is open, said shield moving the firing member against the action of its spring 9, the sear being correspondingly moved out of operative engagement with the trigger. The firing member comprises a block 14 slidably fitting in a housing 1, a rod 12, and a firing pin actuator 13 having a cam 17 affixed to one end. A shield affixed to the breech or breech latch or operated through linkage by the breech is moved into engagement with the cam 17 when the breech is opened, to move the firing member against the action of spring 9. The sear 7 is slidably mounted on the pivotal pin such that the action of spring 30 urges the sear in the same direction of the firing member until the recesses 49, 50 in the sear and trigger respectively co-operate to cause no rotary movement of the sear 7 when the trigger is depressed. When the breech is closed the firearm will not fire even if the trigger has been pressed when the breech is open or if the trigger is still pressed when the breech is closed. Firing mechanism.-When the trigger is pressed the firing member 13 moves rearwardly and the surfaces 15, 16 engage the surfaces 21, 22 in a block 19 carrying a firing pin 23 to move the block upwardly to fire the cartridge. The side acting pin shown (Fig. 2) can be replaced by one acting longitudinally or by an electrically operating device. Breech mechanism.-The breech 35, Fig. 3, is hinged longitudinally at 45 and carries a Venturi 36. A breech latch 37, hinged at 39, 40 carries the safety shield 44. The breech retains the latch in its open position until the breech is closed when the latch can be turned to lock the breech closed.
