994,872. Master cylinders. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960, [No. 32463/60. Heading F2F. In a master cylinder for hydraulic brake mechanisms means are provided in the bore of the cylinder for causing the hydraulic fluid as it is displaced by the piston movement to sweep the region at the outlet end of the cylinder before passing into the outlet. As shown in Fig. 1, the cup-type outlet valve 9 is surrounded by a metal cap 10 to cause the fluid displaced by the piston 5 to flow through annular space 11 and then to be displaced radially through the restricted space between the open end of the cap 10 and the spacing washer 16 into the annular space 12 from where it passes to the outlet 8. In another embodiment the outlet is normally closed by an annular diaphragm valve which co-operates with one end of a cylindrical member formed with a flange which causes the fluid to sweep the walls of the cylinder before passing through the valve. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, applied to a servo-actuated barrel-type master cylinder the fluid passes through the clearance 37 between a flange 31 on a cylindrical member 32 and the wall of the cylinder and then through radial slots 36 to the outlet 25. In operation, fluid passes through the central opening in the piston 27 upon initial movement of the rod 29 and is then deflected radially outwards through slots 34 and through the clearance 35 into the main portion of the cylinder barrel. A baffle placed at an angle, e.g. 10 degrees to the horizontal may be provided in the reservoir to prevent air bubbles forming beneath the baffle.
