384,724. Fluid - pressure brakes; valves; stuffing- boxes. BARKER, G. G., 14, High Holborn, London.-(Hydraulic Brake Co. ; 2843, East Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Sept. 17, 1931, No. 26061. [Class 103 (i).] A valve device, particularly for retaining a pressure above atmospheric in the brake cylinders of a hydraulic brake system when the brakes are released, to prevent inlet of air to the system comprises a rigid cup-shaped member 44 with an upturned edge 46, normally seated by a spring 48 on the end of the master cylinder 3 to close the passage 56 leading to the brake cylinders. A member 55 of rubber or other resilient material secured within the member 44 by a bead 52 normally closes apertures 54 in the member 44. When the master piston 6 is operated, as by a pedal, to apply the brakes the liquid presses back the member 55 and flows through the apertures 54 to the passage 56 but the liquid can only return to the cylinder 3 during release of the brakes as long as the pressure in the passage 56 is sufficient to unseat the member 44 against the action of the spring 48. In the system shown, the reservoir connected at 36 communicates through passages 34, 33 with the rear of the piston 6 and the chamber formed by a rubber &c. boot 22 secured at one end to the cylinder 3 and at the other to the piston-rod 16 by a nut 20. A second boot 28 for protecting the boot 22 is secured at one end by a collar 31 on the nut 20 and at the other by the ring 25 and collar 27 thereon, the ring 25 serving also to fix the one end of the boot 22. A port 62 connects the reservoir to the forward part of the cylinder 3 in the release position of the piston 6. During the release movement of the piston effected by the spring 48, the pressure in the forward part of the cylinder 3 tends to fall, causing liquid to flow into it from behind the piston through the passages 37 and past the packing-cup 8. The connection of the operating pedal 59 with the piston comprises a rod 58 slidable in the pistonrod 16.
