The normal annular thread-tensioning surface 21 of a sewing machine thread-tensioner disc 4 is interrupted by a gap 22 to permit the escape of particles removed from the thread. As shown, the thread tensioner is mounted on a horizontal axis, and gap 22 opens downwardly. A surface 23, coplanar with surface 21, may be provided in gap 22. Either one or both co-acting discs may have a gap 22. A tensioner may have one or more pairs of co-acting discs.
