Abstract

An electrical conductor is provided with an adherent protective and electrically insulating coating, said coating comprising a thermosetting resin reinforced with a refractory insulating material of a higher dielectric strength than the resin, and in the form of micro-crystalline flakes, the flakes of the said material being arranged in planes lying substantially parallel to the surface of the said conductor. The preferred resin is an epoxy resin and the preferred refractory insulating material is mica. The powdered resin and the flakes of refractory insulating material may be introduced into a closed chamber within which an electrostatic field is established, and the metal parts to be coated then introduced into this chamber. The conductor may then be heated for example by passing an electric current through it to cause the coating to coalesce. Alternatively, the resin and the refractory material may be applied in the form of alternate layers by the electrostatic method. The resin alone may be deposited by dip-coating or by the fluidized bed process. The metal parts may be pretreated with an epoxy resin varnish prior to the application of the insulating coating. Portions of the metal surface not required to be coated may be protected by a mask. To produce a metal member comprising an assembly of separate conductors, the individual conductors are initially coated by the electrostatic process described, the whole p assembly being subsequently reheated to allow the individual coatings to coalesce; a further coating may then be applied to the composite unit.
