Abstract
999,608. Insulators. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. March 16, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10514/61. Heading H2C. A method of manufacturing a high-voltage insulator having one or more embedded, conducting inserts comprises holding a heated support 10 in a fluidized bed 23 of synthetic resin powder until a sintered layer of resin of predetermined thickness is formed thereon, applying an electrically conducting insert 28, such as a metal foil, to the outer surface of the resin layer and forming a further layer of resin of predetermined thickness around the insert by again holding the heated support in the fluidized bed. In the apparatus shown a roller 24, associated with an index and scale 27 is used to indicate the thickness of the coatings as they are formed and to assist in feeding in the inserts. It is alternatively possible, however, to apply a first coating to a support, then to remove it from the resin powder in order to apply the conductive insert and then to replace it in the powder to form the outer coating, and this procedure may be repeated several times if desired. The coating resin may be, for example, an epoxy resin or high density polythene. Specifications 759,214 and 999,609 are referred to.
