Abstract

1,015,445. Dip-moulding balloons and the like. OAK RUBBER CO. June 9, 1964 [July 24, 1963], No. 23805/64. Heading B5A. In a process where articles such as balloons are formed by dip moulding, an electrical potential obtained from a D.C. source or by an electrostatic method is formed between the dipping tank 7 and each former 1 at the instant when the latter enters latex 8, thereby, according to the invention, preventing the formation of blisters at the point of contact. In the embodiment shown, the formers 1 are pivoted to a rod 12 moved by a conveyor 14, and the formers move into and out of tank 7 by cooperation of a cam track 16 and rotatable sleeves 15. The sleeves make appropriately timed contact with contact-areas 19. The formers may be of metal such as aluminium or of non-conductive material such as glass, porcelain, wood or plastics in which case a conductor is passed through the former to a metal tip positioned thereon at the point of initial contact with the latex. Alternatively a plastics former may have a thin metal coating. In a further embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a number of formers are attached to a manually movable support. The applied voltage may vary between 5 and 1000 V. depending on the weight of the former, e.g. 350-400 V. for formers having a weight range 4 ozs.-1 pound. The latex may be of natural or synthetic rubber and a preferred coagulant is a solution of calcium nitrate in alcohol. Detailed examples are given.
