Abstract

The surfaces bounding the coil-receiving space of a spool &c for use in electromagnets &c. is coated with insulating material by projecting thereagainst a spray of finely-divided solid particles heated to such an extent that they adhere to the p surfaces to be electrically insulated. The material, e.g. powdered polythene, shellac, ebonite &c. is preferably sucked from a container and propelled by a spray gun through a flame on to a pre-heated spool. After the wire has been wound upon the spool &c. an outer protective coating may be applied in the above manner. In cases where the electromagnet has two or more windings, adjacent windings may be separated by an insulating layer applied in the above manner. As an alternative, the spool may be sprayed with varnish, then with fibres, and then finally with varnish or with heated powdered insulating material.
