An intra-uterine device for use as a contraceptive comprises a resilient strand, which may be of synthetic resin such as polyethylene or of metal coated with such a resin. It is shaped as a flat spiral 25, as in the parent Specification but with a straight extension 27 forming a continuation of the outer end of the spiral. When the device is in position this extension protrudes slightly from the cervix and renders the presence and positioning of the device apparent. In this form of the device the inner end 26 of the spiral is of reduced diameter for a short distance to facilitate bending to the correct shape on insertion with a suitable cannula.
