An intra-uterine device 10 is formed from a resilient wire of plastics or stainless steel material which is bent to form a somewhat flattened spiral, the device being able to be contracted and then expanded along the axis of the spiral so that it may be inserted into the uterus without dilatation. A loop 30 is provided to facilitate removal of the device.
