An intra-uterine contraceptive device of resilient material is formed with a bight 12 from which extends upwardly a pair of arms 14, 16, each arm having a terminus 26, 28 for disposition adjacent the mouth of a Fallopian tube and there being an outwardly bulged portion 22, 24 in each arm between the bight and a fulcrum part 42, 44 so that uterine contractions on the bulged portions cause the fulcrum parts 42, 44 to abut and the termini 26, 28 to be pressed outward to aid the retention of the device in the uterus. The device may be of a plastics material with a plastics or gut withdrawal cord 52, and a thin filament 56 may extend between the fulcrum parts 42, 44.
