Abstract
1,133,905. Intra-uterine devices. C. E. TAYLOR. 20 April, 1967 [22 April, 1966], No. 18272/67. Heading A5R. An intra-uterine contraceptive device comprises a closed loop of flexible material formed as two legs 12 of substantially equal length intersecting at an apex end and a base 16 joining the other ends of the legs, the intersection of the legs and the junctures of the legs and base being flexible and forming hinges whereby the contraceptive device can be collapsed for insertion into the uterus. As shown, the device is formed from a plastics material and comprises four parts 12, 16 joined to each other such that the device may be collapsed by bending it at the joints 14, 18, 20. The device includes a withdrawal thread 24 and a notch 22 by which it may be pushed into the uterus using forceps (see Figure 3, not shown). In alternative embodiments (Figures 4-10, not shown) the parts 16 (40, 70) are aligned or are directed towards the centre of the loop and the withdrawal thread (50, 76) is secured to the junction 20 (42, 72) and extends through a slotted tongue (44) or tube (74) which is attached to the loop at a point adjacent the notch 22 (35, 66).
