Abstract
A non-inflammable filter material comprises mineral fibres, e.g. glass and asbestos, and potassium polyphosphate. The material may also contain cellulose fibres, a flexible and non-inflammable resin, e.g. a fireproofed polyvinyl acetate, and a filter, e.g. calcium indicator. Methods disclosed for making the material are: (1) preformed filter material comprising mineral fibres is impregnated with a dispersion of potassium polyphosphate in a dilute solution of calcium chloride, which has preferably been allowed to age; (2) preformed filter material comprising mineral fibres is impregnated with an aqueous solution of monopotassium orthophosphate, dried and heated to a temperature at which the orthophosphate is converted to polyphosphate; (3) potassium polyphosphate is introduced into an aqueous suspension of the fibres, from which suspension a filter material in sheet form is made by paper-making methods; the potassium polyphosphate may be in the form of a dispersion in a dilute solution of calcium chloride, and the fibrous supension may include an alkali metal indicate; and (4) monopotassium orthophosphate is introduced into an aqueous suspension of the fibres, a filter material in sheet form is produced from the suspension by paper-making methods, and the orthophosphate converted to polyphosphate by heat; the monopotassium orthophosphate may be in the form of an aqueous solution to which an alkali metal silicate has been added and in which fibres of cellulose are dispersed, this dispersion being added to the aqueous dispersion of mineral fibres, after which an aqueous solution of calcium chloride is added to precipitate calcium silicate.
