Abstract

A fibre having a diameter of not greater than about 1 micron consists essentially of silica and an oxide of an alkaline earth metal. The fibre may also contain from about 6 to about 18% chemically combined water. The fibre is made by leaching the alkali from a fibre of alkali silicate glass by an aqueous solution of a watersoluble salt of the metal, the anion of the salt during the leaching forming a water-soluble salt with the metal of the alkali oxide, e.g. a sodium-silica fibre is leached with a calcium chloride solution to form a calcium-silica fibre. Small quantities of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 may be present. A slurry of these fibres may be made and passed through a screen which retains a mat of the fibres which will function as a filter paper. It is stated that a paper containing 1/3 by weight of these fibres mixed with 2/3 by weight of ordinary glass fibres will filter smoke from the air. Specification 824,972 is referred to.
