Abstract

Silica fibres (containing about 99% silica, or, as in one example, at least 99.9% silica) are produced from fibres having diameters of less than about one micron (particularly 0.01 to 1.0 micron) made from a glass consisting essentially of silica and alkali metal oxide in a weight ratio of about 4 to 1 and leaching the alkali metal oxide from the fibres to leave essentially silica and chemically combined water. The chemically combined water may be removed by heating to about 1000 DEG F., leaving substantially pure silica in fibre form. A particular glass from which the fibres are made consists of about 78.2% silica and 21.8% sodium oxide. The leaching agent may be (hot) water, a mineral acid solution, or an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride to which a small amount of H2PtCl6 may be added. The leached fibres may be dispersed in water and then flowed on to a screen to form a felt. When pressed the fibre forms a paper which may be used for electric or heat insulation or as a screen for repelling the effects of radiation as in nuclear units.
