Abstract

In the production of temperature-resistant mats of silica fibres, the mats are initially formed from fibres comprising silica and metallic oxide and a leaching fluid is then circulated through the mat to remove the metal oxide from the fibres. The leaching fluid may be water or an aqueous acid solution and pressure may be applied to the mat during leaching. The mat may be formed by dry-felting the fibres or by suspending them in a fluid and then wet-felting them. The average diameter of the fibres may be less than about one micron and most of the fibres may be less than three-eighths of an inch long.
