Abstract

992,039. Variable-speed friction gearing. PARRISH INSTRUMENTS Ltd. May 7, 1963 [May 7, 1962], No. 17467/62. Heading F2D. A variable-speed friction gear comprises a pair of balls 9, 10 mounted in a cage 15 to bear on each other and one each on driving 6 and driven 8 cones. The cage 15 is moved axially by a screw and nut mechanism which may have a constant or a variable lead screw thread or a differential thread allowing reversal of motion of the cage at the ends of travel. One cone, preferably the driven, is axially loaded for grip by a Bellville washer 16, and the cage 15 is constrained to carry the balls in a direction parallel to the inclined surfaces of the cones. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the two cones are connected to a differential gear such that movement of the balls from mid-position provides forward and reverse rotation of the output shaft 50 at varying ratios.
