Abstract
3349. Soprounoff, F. P. Feb. 9. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to devices in which balls engage helical and longitudinal slots in different members of the apparatus, so that a direct solid drive, and, according to the direction and pitch of the helical slots, another forward or a reverse drive, may be obtained. The driving-shaft A, Fig. 1, carries helical slots a, in which move balls d', which also engage longitudinal slots b in a cylindrical extension C, D of the driven shaft B, and helical slots c in a loose outer sleeve E. Guideways d are formed in the sleeve E to allow the balls to circulate. The sleeve E may be moved longitudinally to prevent the balls from entering the guideways d, and the whole device then rotates solid with the shaft A. If the sleeve E is held stationary by a brake G, the shaft B is rotated in the forward direction if the slots a, c are of opposite hand. When the slots a, c are of the same hand, the shaft B is rotated in the forward direction when the pitch of the slots a is greater than that of the slots c, and in the reverse direction when the pitch of the slots c is the greater.
