Abstract

1590. Dykes, J., Dykes, A., Dykes, A., Stewart, H. J., and Pettigrew, A. S. Jan. 22. Variable - speed gearing. -In a variable-speed driving - mechanism, two, three, or more worms or screws with single, double, or triple threads are adapted to gear with a common worm - wheel d, Fig. 1. The worm spindle a is carried by a frame b which is adapted to slide along the fixture c. A shaft g passes through the frame b and it has projections h, Figs. 1 and 3, which are attached to rings i encircling antifriction metal or ball thrust collars j. The gear is put into operation by sliding the frame b along the fixture c, by means of mechanism attached to the shaft g, until the required worm is in its proper position, and then turning the shaft g until the full end of its projections h are engaged in suitable slots in the fixture c, the worm by the same movement being turned into engagement with the worm-wheel d. The worms are arranged so that, when one is engaged with the wheel d, the others are clear of the same. The worm spindle may be driven by universal couplings, flexible shafting, &c.
