Abstract

Hydroxylated refined tall oil fatty acids (comprising mainly oleic and linoleic acids) are prepared by reacting the acids with hydroperoxide, preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, p-toluen sulphonic acid, acetic acid or a mixture of acetic and sulphuric acids. When the catalyst comprises acetic acid some of the hydroxy groups in the product may be esterified. The above products are then further reacted with 1-60 mols. of an alkylene oxide in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. an oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of Na, K, Ba or Ca. The alkylene oxide may be ethylene, propylene, butylene, hexylene or octylene oxide. In examples, hydroxylated refined tall oil fatty acids are reacted with 3,4,5, or 8 mols. of ethylene oxide.ALSO:A brake fluid comprises 10-30 vol. per cent of hydroxylated alkoxylated tall oil fatty acids (see Division C2), 20-70 vol. per cent of an alkylene glycol and/or an alkylene glycol ether, and 10-50 vol. per cent of an alcohol. The tall oil derivative may contain acetate groups depending on its preparation. Exemplary glycol and glycol ether components are hexylene glycol, di- and tri-ethylene glycols, dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol mono-methyl or butyl ether, and 3 - methoxybutanol - 1. Exemplary alcohols are methyl isobutyl carbinol, tertiary butanol, and isoamyl alcohol. In some examples, the brake fluids also contain triethanolamine and 2.2 - Bis (p - hydroxyphenyl) propane.
