Abstract
Hair and fibrous material which is to be continuously and uniformly fed to a processing machine is supplied to a fixed or moving conveyer e.g. a slide plate or an endless belt, on which it is compacted before entering the machine. The hair &c. is supplied in a loose layer and engaged by a feeder which (if the conveyer is moving) moves in the same direction as but at a higher speed than the conveyer, and the foremost portion of the layer is, with the aid of the feeder, pushed and compacted on the conveyer against stops e.g. stripping rollers, at the end thereof or against a web already formed thereon. The feeder is disposed above the conveyer and comprises staggered or aligned sets of moving gripper arms extending through a grate, the arms of each set being connected (to form a rake) by spring-loaded, pivotably mounted cross-members.
