In a doll the cry-producing mechanism comprises a reed operated by a cylinder and piston driven by an electric motor. A main switch 10 is closed by movement of the arm 17 to close contacts 7, 11 to the battery 4. The circuit to the electric motor 8 is closed by a gravity switch 9 when the doll is laid down, whereby the shaft 28 of the motor 8 rotates an arm 20 connected to a piston 22 moving in a cylinder 24 to operate a sound-emitting reed 25.
