Abstract

989,364. Applying predetermined tensions to bolts. J. D. CUMMING. March 21,1962 [March 21, 1961], No. 10844/62. Heading F2H. [Also in Division G1] The tension on a rock bolt 12 is indicated by the spread of the legs of a resilient U-shaped member 24, as a dome of a dome-shaped washer 19 is forced between them on tightening a nut 17. A sheet metal protective member 32 is placed between the dome and the U-shaped member, the flanges 35 and tabs 34 thereof defining channels in which the ends of member 24 may rest. The correct tension may be indicated when the ends of the legs of the U-shaped member correspond with the ends of the tabs 34. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the protective member is a domed member which fits closely over the domed washer and the position of the ends of the legs relative to a point on a circumferential flange of the domed member gives an indication of the bolt tension. The U-shaped member 24 also acts to maintain the tension on the bolt.
