Abstract

Polymers are internally lubricated by incorporation of 0.01-1% of one or more fatty ketones of formula CH3-(CH2)n-CO-(CH2)n-CH3 where n is 10-18, during or after polymerization of an aromatic vinyl monomer or a copolymer of such a monomer with one or more vinyl monomers, or a mixture of such polymers with or without one or more elastomeric resins. The ketone may be laurone or stearone and may be incorporated in the polymer by mechanical mixing in the cold or hot, or by melting the ketone in the monomer. In examples styrene, with and without acrylonitrile, was polymerized with the ketone in suspension in water using calcium phosphate as suspending agent, polyvinyl alcohol as protective colloid and benzoyl peroxide as catalyst; styrene was polymerized in bulk with the ketone and polymerized as an emulsion in water using stearic acid and potassium hydroxide, dodecyl mercaptan and potassium persulphate and the emulsion was coagulated by heat treatment; and a mixture of styrene polymer and butadiene-styrene (3:1) copolymer containing ketone was granulated.
