Abstract
A polymeric product for use as protection against the action of heat and radiation is produced by polymerizing at least one organic polymerizable monomer containing at least one terminal CH2=C< group in the molecule and having a solubility in water not exceeding 10% by weight, in inverted emulsion (i.e. a water-in-oil emulsion) employing an emulsifier which is capable of forming inverted emulsions. The resulting product may contain up to 5,000 volume per cent. of water. Preferred monomers are those containing only one terminal CH2=C< group. A long list of suitable monomers is provided. It is preferred to use homopolymers or copolymers of styrene. The polymerizable unsaturated compounds are the oil phase or constitute 5-100% by weight of the oil phase. Examples of suitable emulsifiers are fatty acid salts having low hydrophilic power, non-ionic emulsifiers and high molecular weight substances, all present in amounts of from 0.5-10% by weight. The polymerization is carried out with the usual free radical catalyst and contactors, at a temperature of -10 to +100 DEG C. Various organic or inorganic fillers may be added to the emulsion which may be cast in a mould or used as a surface coating or in the form of granules. Specifications 928,621 and 962,702 are referred to.ALSO:A polymeric product for use as protection against the action of heat and radiation is produced by polymerizing at least one organic polymerizable monomer containing at least one terminal CH2 = C< group in the molecule and having a solubility in water not exceeding 10% by weight, in inverted emulsion (i.e. a water-in-oil emulsion) employing an emulsifier which is capable of forming inverted emulsions. The resulting product may contain up to 5000 volume per cent of water. A long list of suitable monomers is provided, the preferred monomer being styrene. The emulsion may be cast in moulds, used as a surface coating. A granulated form of the product is used in fighting fires. The resulting material has a low thermal conductivity and is completely non-inflammable. Specifications 928,621 and 962,702 are referred to.
