Abstract
5 - Chloro - 4 - amino - 2,6 - dimethyl - pyrimidine is made by chlorinating 4-amino-2,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine in an aqueous medium containing a mineral acid, especially hydrochloric or sulphuric and preferably at least 1 mol. of the former or 1 equivalent of the latter, at preferably from 20 DEG to 60 DEG C., using substantially 1 mol. of chlorine per mol. of the pyrimidine. The product may be separated out from the reaction by the addition of alkali. The examples describe the use of hydrochloric and sulphuric acids. Nitric acid is also stated to be suitable.
