Abstract

Propylene oxide (I) is prepd. by chlorinating and for oxychlorinating propylene, pref. at 450-550 degrees C; then hydrating the monochloropropylene to give a 100-500 g/l aq. soln. of propylene glycol monohydrin (II); and finally saponifying with a base to give (I). The process uses only half the chlorine and base used normally. The saponification yield is improved with less waste by products produced. Because conc. solns. of (II) are used, smaller bulk is required, and so plant investment costs are lower. Partic., using caustic soda for the saponification, this concentration of the waste salt liquors is such that they can be recycled for chlorine production by electrolysis.
