Abstract

1489781 Separation of sodium fluoride from sodium carbonate IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 28802/74 Heading ClA A process for the separation of sodium fluoride from an aqueous liquor comprising sodium carbonate and sodium fluoride comprises crystallizing the liquor to produce a slurry comprising sodium carbonate monohydrate and sodium fluoride in an associated mother liquor, and classifying the slurry to separate it into a first slurry portion comprising substantially sodium fluoride and a second slurry portion comprising substantially monohydrate. The process may be used for reducing the fluoride content of crude soda ash derived from crude tronaby; (i) dissolving 1 the crude soda ash in water and/ or aqueous sodium carbonate solution to provide an aqueous solution comprising sodium carbonate and sodium fluoride; (ii) evaporating 4 the aqueous solution obtained in stage (i) to produce a slurry comprising sodium carbonate monohydrate in a mother liquor comprising sodium carbonate and sodium fluoride; (iii) separating 6 the slurry into monohydrate and the mother liquor of stage (ii); (iv) evaporating 8 the mother liquor from stage (iii) in the presence of recycled mother liquor from stage (vi) to produce a slurry comprising monohydrate and sodium fluoride in a mother liquor; (v) classifying 9 the slurry from stage (iv) to separate it into a first slurry portion comprising substantially sodium fluoride and the mother liquor of stage (iv) and a second slurry portion comprising substantially monohydrate and the mother liquor of stage (iv); (vi) separating 10 the first slurry portion of (v) into sodium fluoride and mother liquor and recycling the mother liquor to stage (iv); (vii) separating 12 the second slurry portion of (v) into monohydrate and mother liquor; (viii) decomposing the monohydrate from stages (iii) and (vii) to produce soda ash. The aqueous solution of stage (i) may be settled or filtered 2 to remove insoluble impurities and treated 3 with charcoal, H 2 O 2 , hypochlorite or Cl 2 to reduce the level of organic impurities, prior to stage (ii).
