Abstract

Mixed textile materials containing both constituents having basic sites and constituents having acidic sites are dyed by applying a liquour or paste comprising an acidic dye, a basic dye, 35-65% of an anionic levelling agent, 36-65% of a weakly cationic complexing agent and 0.1-3% of thiourea or an N-alkylthiourea, the percentage being based on the combined weight of said levelling agent, complexing agent and thiourea. Materials having basic sites are known base-modified polyacrylonitriles as well as polyamides, wool, silk, mohair and angora and materials having acidic sites are known other acrylic polymers. The anionic levelling agent may be a compound of the formula R-A-R1. Where R and R1 are the same or different and are sulphonated benzene or naphthalene nuclei and A is a direct link or an -SO2-, -NH- or -(CH2)ngroup where n is an integer from 1 to 4 especially sodium a , a 1-dinaphthyl-b , b 1-disulphonate and sodium a , a 1-dinaphthylmethane-b , b 1, disulphonate. The weakly cationic agent may be polyvinyl pyrrolidone or an ethylene oxide condensation product with a C12-C22 alkyl, aryl or aralkyl amine, especially a compound of the formula CH3(CH2)17NH(CH2CH2O)x-H where x is about 6. The N-alkylthiourea may be N-methylthiourea. Sulphur-containing reducing agents may be included in small quantities. The acidic dyes may or may not contain complexed metal atoms and they may be disperse dyes containing weakly anionic groups. The basic dyes may be ordinary basic dyes or cationic dyes specially formulated for dyeing acrylic fibres. Dyeing may be effected at 100-140 DEG C. The fibre blends to be dyed may further contain polyester fibres (whose colour remains unchanged) and polyvinylalcohol fibres (which are dyed by both acid and basic dyestuffs). Examples are given.
