Abstract

Mix spun or blended goods of acrylonitrile polymer fibres with other fibres, e.g. of wool, polyamide, cellulose or aromatic polyester, are dyed simultaneously from a single dyebath containing a cationic dyestuff and an amionic or disperse dyestuff and a polyethylene glycol ether sulphate of the formula <FORM:0986034/D1-D2/1> wherein M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, R is an alkyl group of 10-18 carbon atoms and n is 5-50 in an amount from 0.5-2 mols per mol of cationic dyestuff employed. If desired a part of the said polyethylene glycol ether sulphate may be replaced by a polyoxyethylene ether of the formula <FORM:0986034/D1-D2/2> wherein R and n are as previously defined. The specified radicals R are decyl, lauryl, myristyl, cetyl, stearyl and oleyl radicals. The acrylonitrile polymer fibres may be wet or dry spun from polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer consisting of more than 80% by weight of acrylonitrile but no basic monomer, though it may contain other comonomers, many of which are specified. The cationic dyes are any such dye which is suitable for dyeing the above acrylic fibres. The amionic dyes are direct, acid, acid mordant or metal complex acid dyes and the disperse dyes are especially those suitable for polyesters. In the case of dyeing acrylic/polyester blends the dyebath may also contain an amionic dispersant and a carrier. The dyebaths may be prepared by mixing the polyethylene glycol ether sulphate and the cationic dye and then adding the anionic or disperse dye, bringing the bath to pH 2-6 with, e.g., acetic acid. When acrylic/cellulose blends are to be dyed the goods may first be dyed with the cationic dye adding the polyethylene ether sulphate, amionic and sodium chloride and continuing the dyeing at the boil. Examples are given.
