Abstract

987,996. Vehicle bumpers. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Jan. 1, 1962 [Jan. 11, 1961; Nov. 15, 1961], No. 67/62. Heading B7J. A vehicle bumper assembly comprises a lower element 1, Figs. 2 and 3, secured to the vehicle underframe 3 and an upper element 2 secured by supports 10 to members 7 hinged at 6 to angle members 4 secured to the underframe 3, whereby the element 2 may either be in an operative position behind a door or cover 13 and above the level of the vehicle floor 21, or may be lowered to the position 2<SP>11</SP>, to facilitate access to the interior of the vehicle body. The element 2 is urged to both its operative and lowered positions by springs 14 connected at 15 to the angle members 4 and at 16 to the members 7, the springs passing through " dead-centre " positions. In operation when the door is opened shoes 12 thereon slidably engage shoes 11 on the element 2 and cause it to swing about the hinges at 6. In the raised position, the element 2 engages rubber pads 17 carried at 18 on the vehicle body. The members 7 then engage pads 9 on the members 4. According to another embodiment both bumper elements 1 and 2 are carried by hingeable members 7.
