Abstract
Liquid having a low solids content is obtained from vegetative materials by adding alpha cellulose fibres substantially free from fines and predominantly in the range of 1-10 mm/s. in length, forming a swollen inter-tangled mass of the fibres uniformly distributed in the vegetative pulp, and reducing the volume of the mass to separate the liquid from residual solids retained by the inter-tangled mass of fibres. Preferably the fibres are added in a proportion of 0,5-5% by weight. Preferably they are derived from sulphite soft wood pulp. The volume reduction may be effected by a continuous screw press or by two in series (for the pulp), the juices therefrom being combined. The first of these presses may be replaced by a continuous centrifugal extractor; alternatively, both may be replaced by a hydraulic reciprocating press. The pulp may be preconditioned by adding pectic-substance-degrading enzymatic material in a proportion of, e.g., 0,2-0,4%. The pulp may be heat-treated at various stages, and may be macerated prior to the addition of cellulose fibres. Apples in bulk may have the cellulose fibres added prior to disintegration and screw-pressing. The process may be applied to citrus fruit pulp, cooked prune pulp, grape pulp or aqueous potato waste, or carrots, beets, celery, rhubarb, pears, quinces and pineapples.
